Permits B, L, C, G: which Swiss residence permit is yours?
In Switzerland, your status depends on a permit. Understanding which one applies to you saves you plenty of missteps.
Permit B — residence
The most common one for anyone coming to work or settle long-term. Valid for one year (EU/EFTA: five years), renewable. This is the permit most newcomers start out on.
Permit L — short-term
For a limited stay or contract (usually up to one year). Tied to a specific job.
Permit C — settlement
Settlement permit, generally granted after 5 to 10 years of residence. Broader rights, and no more renewal of the permit itself.
Permit G — cross-border
For anyone who works in Switzerland but lives in a neighbouring country and returns home regularly. No registration with the commune, nor Swiss LAMal under the same conditions.
Your permit type changes your deadlines (LAMal, tax at source, driving licence exchange) — which is exactly why it pays to start from your precise situation.
